twitter down

Well, we finally have a glimpse of the "Square", the new mobile payments company from Twitter co-founder and president Jack stramb. As expected, this is a little extra time that can turn an iPhone into a portable credit card.

The funny part: Details about the small-business-oriented project have been on the Web for months. It was just that nobody had put two and two together until some eagle-eyed folks at Engadget realized that a URL on a screenshot of the "Square iPhone Payments Venture" first reported by Coolhunting matched a domain registered to Dorsey.

We heard that the company is called square, instead of the "Squirrel", the name was originally reported (according to TechCrunch MG Siegler, so it looks like a piece of acorn), due to some obscure legal licensing rights ornaments copyright issues. CNET News first reported the name change in conjunction with the news that Dorsey was an angel investor in a position under the boot of mobile browsing square.
