Shares of Cisco /quotes/comstock/15*!csco/quotes/nls/csco (CSCO 23.95, +0.17, +0.70%) gained a fraction in early trading after the networking gear maker unveiled the plan to acquire Starent, which makes gear that helps mobile carriers connect wireless phone users to the Internet.

Under the agreement, San Jose, California-based Cisco paid $ 35 per share in cash for each share of Starent. Networking-gear giant will also assume the stock price, the company said.
